Laboratory of Dmitry Krymov

“Tree years ago the first performance of our team was produced. It was named ‚Not a Fairytale‘ and was made by the students of the first year at that time of the department of set-design of Russian Academy of Theatre Arts (RATI-GITIS). It was based on Russian folk fairy tales edited by A.Afanasiev, so they were true Russian fairy tales. The performance was deprived of words. The students — set-designers were actors at the same time and created a series of visual images connected by a single unique plot and idea. Anatoly Vasiliev, one of the most significant theatre directors nowadays, the head of the theatre ‚School of Dramatic Art‘ (Moscow, Russia) visited the performance then and offered to play it on the regular basis at his theatre as well as to create my own Laboratory with my students-artists. Since then, these students (already graduates now) and eight young actors, who graduated from RATI (V. Garkalin’s and M. Zakharov’s workshops) and the Shchukin Theatre Institute, work in School of Dramatic Art where we have our own Laboratory”. According to critics’ reviews we are creating (or at the verge of creation) our unusual “theatre of painters” characterized by its own peculiar aesthetics. We are full of pride, excitement, ambitions and desire to continue our activity…“
